Irish Rentals Market
Dataset
Objective
Explore the Irish rental market ahead of moving to Ireland, and sharpen Tableau dashboarding skills by building an interactive dashboard from real, scraped data rather than a sample dataset.
Approach
Scraped real-time rental listings from daft.ie and myhome.ie in September 2024 using two separate Python/Selenium scrapers. The two sites required different approaches: the daft.ie scraper applied cleaning functions after extraction; the myhome.ie scraper integrated cleaning directly into the extraction pipeline.
The combined dataset of 2,555 listings was loaded into Tableau for analysis and visualisation. The dashboard includes filters for county and property type, with all charts and maps updating dynamically.
Key findings
- 66% of all listings were in and around County Dublin, reflecting how concentrated the Irish rental market is
- Rent-to-income ratio in major city areas: approximately 35% for a dual-income couple (mean income €6,380 / mean rent €2,228)
- Mean rent near major cities (Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway): €2,159, which is 28% higher than other counties at €1,690
- Furnished properties averaged €2,210/month vs. €1,355 for unfurnished
- Dominant property types were House, Apartment, and Flat: 2,407 out of 2,555 listings
